Black Exteriors - 5 Favorites and The One We Chose!

Black exteriors are having a moment right now and I've been wanting a project where I could go all in on the trend! We knew when we purchased the mod flip house that it needed some exterior repairs and a new coat of paint, so it was the perfect house to give the black a go.

Choosing the perfect black paint felt daunting, so I did what I always do and waited until the absolute last minute to test colors. I did some research, laid in bed at 5 in the morning imagining what it could look like, and ultimately collected 5 black exterior colors to choose from...

Wood Siding Before & After

One of the trickier parts of the Mod Flip House were the damaged spots on the exterior siding. We could not find an exact match that would be available in our quick timeline so we had to get creative with trim and salvaging pieces from adding exterior doors before we could consider painting. Once these pieces were repaired it was time to consider the color!

Testing the Black Paint in Different Lighting

Lighting is everything when choosing colors. This house is super moody and shaded by surrounding trees, so I chose the lightest spot of the exterior during the lightest part of the day to see the brightest version the color would ever be. This gave me a data point to then gauge the rest of the house by. All of the true black colors were far too dark on the other parts of the house that were in indirect sunlight, so it made the decision so much easier!

The Color We Chose

We went with Urbane Bronze from Sherwin Williams and could not be happier with it! I wanted to steer clear of a true black and gravitated more towards the smoky colors. I felt like we needed to keep in mind the brown roof, the brick foundation, the wood deck, the surrounding trees, and even the nods to green in the interior finishes.

Urbane Bronze had the smokiest hue with a touch of green depending on the time of day and checked alllllll my boxes...so happy with it!
